Student Exchange Agreement between Université du Québec à Montréal – École des sciences de la gestion, Canada and Shanghai University of Finance and Economics, P. R. China

The École des sciences de la gestion (ESG) of the Université du Québec à Montréal (UQAM), Canada and Shanghai University of Finance and Economics (SUFE), P. R. China, desiring to cooperate on a student exchange program based on the principles of reciprocity and mutual benefit of both universities, in compliance with Article 3 of the Memorandum of Agreement between the two universities, hereby agree that:

  1. Number of Exchange Students: Both institutions agree to send eight (8) undergraduate student units for one academic year. One student unit here means that one student studies at the host university for one semester. One student enrolling at the host university for two consecutive semesters is equivalent to two student units. Overall balance of the exchange student units shall be achieved during the period of the agreement.

  2. Requirements of Admission: All participants must be officially registered at the home university and fulfill the admission requirements of the host university. They shall be selected by the home university and the host university reserves the right of final approval on the admission of exchange students. At the time of their participation in the exchange program, students enrolled in an undergraduate program at their home university will have completed at least one year of full-time studies (or the equivalent) in their program.

  3. Credit Transfer: Credits accumulated at the host university shall be validated by the home university. Upon completion of the exchange period, each university shall provide the other with an official transcript for each participant. The ultimate decision regarding the assigning of credit for studies abroad resides with the student’s home university.

  4. Financial Agreements: Exchange students shall remain registered as full-time students throughout the exchange period and pay normal tuition fees to the home university. They shall be enrolled at the host university without having to pay tuition fees. They are, however, responsible for the cost of living, traveling, accommodation, insurance that is valid in the host nation and other incidental expenses.

    SUFE students will have to subscribe to the foreign students Quebec compulsory medical plan offered by UQAM unless they are nationals of countries which have signed social security bilateral agreements with the Government of Quebec (Belgium, Denmark, Finland, France, Greece, Luxembourg, Norway, Portugal and Sweden).


  5. Advising and Assistance: Each university shall provide students with orientation programs, immigration advising, academic advising, support services, and housing assistance, as available to international students. Each university shall issue appropriate documents for visa purposes in accordance with the current law. It is the responsibility of each individual student to obtain a proper visa in a timely manner.

  6. Students’ Obligations and Entitlements: Exchange students shall be subject to the rules and regulations of the host university. Exchange students shall be entitled to academic resources and support services available to full-time students at the host university. Students shall be exchange students and shall not be eligible for matriculation status at the host institution, unless previously agreed upon in writing by both universities.

  7. Language Skills: Students whose native language is not English will have to demonstrate their ability to perform successfully in university-level coursework where English is the language of instruction and assessment. Students willing to enroll in courses taught in Chinese at SUFE or in French at ESG UQAM will have to supply a certificate attesting to their linguistic skills in Chinese or French to the host university’s authorities.

  8. Coordinators: Each institution shall appoint two coordinators: one will be in charge of the cooperative contracts whose contact information are to be identified in Annex A; the other will be responsible for administering the student exchange program whose contact information are to be identified in Annex B. The contact information shall be updated as required.

  9. Deadlines for Nomination of Students: At ESG UQAM, the selection of students should be completed early enough such that the information required for admission will be received by the coordinator of the exchange program at SUFE no later than May15th for the Fall semester (September to December) and November 15th for the Spring semester (February to July) of the next academic year. At SUFE, the selection of students should be completed early enough such that the information required for admission will be received by the coordinator of the exchange program at ESG UQAM no later than April 1st for the Fall semester (September to December) and November 15th for the Winter semester (January to April) of the next academic year.

  10. Duration, Amendment and Termination: This Agreement shall become effective for five (5) years from the date of the last signature, and shall be renewed automatically upon each expiry unless either of the parties expresses the desire to terminate in writing. Any amendment to this Agreement must be approved by written agreement between the two institutions. No such amendment or revision will come into effect until both institutions have agreed in writing to this amendment or revision. Either party may terminate this Agreement by giving the other institution at least six (6) months prior written notice. Such termination will not affect the validity and continuity of any incompletely discharged obligation agreed upon by the two parties before termination.
